Game build 24841087

Layers this guide uses

There are 18 key pickups on the Mortal Shell 2 world map.

KeyCountMatching lock
Light Key9None recorded on the map; a Locked Chest sits inside or beside each trio
Dungeon Key6Dungeon Door, 2 markers
Crypt Key1Crypt Key Door
Chapel Key1Chapel Key Door
Unremarkable Key1Vlas’s cage branch; exact quest-stage lock unverified

The Vlas key is displayed as Unremarkable Key, so its map label does not match the two Vlas’s Cage markers. The three Locked Chests sit on the chests layer rather than with the doors. Open keys and doors together and the layout becomes clear: the two Dungeon Key trios sit near Dungeon Key Doors, while the three Light Key trios sit near Locked Chests. The second pattern shows proximity, not a confirmed use. The three single keys take more walking.

Chapel Key and the Mushroom Village chapel

The Chapel Key sits in the Mushroom Village area of Fainweald, just east of Tiel’s shell pickup. Its description says that it unlocks the chapel doors outside the village. The Chapel Key Door sits northwest of the village, and the Axe & Dagger weapon marker sits on the same spot, so opening the chapel leads to one of the seven weapon pickups.

Crypt Key: found in the west, used in the northeast

The Crypt Key sits in western Fainweald, a few steps north of a Flower Chest and a short walk southwest of the Locked Gate pocket. The in-game description reads “Opens a locked door within a dungeon,” and the door the map pairs with it is nowhere near the pickup: the Crypt Key Door is in Fainweald’s northeast, clear across the region. The northern Dungeon Key trio is strung out just northwest of that door.

Light Keys come in three trios

The nine Light Keys split into three groups of three, and every group has one Locked Chest marker inside or beside it. The map does not record what a Light Key turns, so read the pairing as map layout rather than a tested mechanic, but the layout repeats three times:

  • Three keys sit a few steps apart on the far eastern edge of the map, and the Locked Chest between them sits in the middle of the trio. Two Stone Gate markers, a Healing Power Chalice and the Heart of Vatra pickup share the pocket.
  • Three more sit in a row along the Mushroom Village’s north side, with a Locked Chest just west of them. The Chapel Key link above lands one screen south of this group.
  • The last three sit on the Mammon side, running north from the eastern City Map Station, and the Locked Chest beside the southernmost key is close enough to touch.

Blackmarrow Key is a different item. Its description reads, “Opens a locked treasure in the Marrow Keep.” The place to obtain the key and the treasure it fits are not among these 18 markers.

Dungeon Keys sit beside their doors

The six Dungeon Keys also come as trios, and each trio has a Dungeon Door marker at its edge.

  • The northern three are strung along a short stretch of Fainweald’s north edge. Their door sits just east of them, inside the same view as the Crypt Key Door link above.
  • The southeastern three cluster a few steps apart on the Mammon side, with their door right beside them and a Healing Charge Chalice right on the door.

What lies past a Dungeon Door is dungeon interior, which the world map does not chart.

What does the Unremarkable Key open?

The Unremarkable Key sits on the Mammon side, a few steps north of the Ballistazooka sidearm marker. Its description says the lock is unknown, but the key is associated with Vlas’s cage branch. The exact quest stage or object that uses it is not confirmed, so pick it up while fetching the Ballistazooka and keep it for Vlas.

Vlas’s Cage and the two Locked Gates

Everything else locked crowds into one pocket of northwest Fainweald. Both Locked Gate markers, both Vlas’s Cage markers, and a Breakable Gate sit within a short walk of each other, with a Lever Slot marker beside the eastern Locked Gate. Eredrim’s shell pickup is in the same pocket. The Unremarkable Key is far away on the Mammon side, and its exact cage remains unknown. Use the dedicated Vlas guide for all three map links and follow the active objective when you need Vlas himself.
