Layers this guide uses

The tool layer holds 52 markers covering 39 tools, and it answers where to get one rather than only where one lies. 27 of the markers are tools lying in a room. The other 25 are tools a trader sells, marked at the trader.

That split matters more than the total. 24 of the 39 tools exist only as something you walk to, 14 are only ever bought, and one is both: the Magnetite Dice lies in Blasted Steps and a trader stocks it as well.

Fourteen of Pharloom’s 31 areas hold no tool on the ground at all. If you are sweeping for tools rather than shopping, those fourteen can wait for a different run.

The 25 on traders’ shelves

Stock clusters where the traders are: the Citadel has 6 tool listings, Blasted Steps and Underworks 4 each, High Halls, Deep Docks and Whispering Vaults 3 each, and Bone Bottom and Bellhart 1 apiece.

Several tools are stocked in more than one place, which is why 15 tools account for 25 markers. Ascendant’s Grip, the Spool Extender and Spider Strings turn up at four traders each, and the Magnetite Brooch at two. The rest are single listings: Snitch Pick, Cogwork Wheel, Silkshot, Thief’s Mark, Sting Shard, Sawtooth Circlet, Scuttlebrace, Magma Bell, the Multibinder and the Magnetite Dice.

If a tool you want is on that list, stop looking for it in the world. Nothing is hidden; it is on a shelf.

Where the found tools bunch up

Weavenest Atla is the densest patch by a wide margin. It carries three of the tools in an area with only 87 marked places on it, so a trip there is short and pays three times.

The Citadel has three pickups but two tools, because both Claw Mirror pickups sit there alongside the upgraded Claw Mirrors. Far Fields is the other three-tool area, and its set is spread rather than stacked.

The Curveclaw and the Curvesickle are worth noting together. They are the pair a player expects to find near each other, and they are not: one is in Hunter’s March, the other in Far Fields.

Search by name if you are after a specific one. Typing Wispfire Lantern or Magnetite Dice into the search box jumps straight to the marker, which is quicker than filtering when you already know the name.

Why other tool counts differ

Lists elsewhere put the Silksong tool total at 42, 51, 53, 57, 59 or 65 depending on which one you read. The spread comes from two decisions each author makes silently: whether shop stock counts, and whether an upgraded version is a separate tool.

This map counts 39 tools because that is what it can point at. A tool that exists only as a reward for something the map does not track is not on it, and neither is anything the game hands you outright.

If your list says 59 and the map says 39, both can be right. Compare the halves rather than the totals: 27 places to walk to, 25 listings to buy from.

Clearing the layer

Twenty-seven ground pickups is small enough to finish in a couple of sessions if you plan around the stations. Nine of the seventeen areas that hold one have a fast travel point of their own: the Citadel, Far Fields, Bellhart, Blasted Steps, Deep Docks, Greymoor, High Halls, Putrified Ducts and Underworks.

Tools with benches and stations puts all three on one sheet, which is the view for planning a run rather than looking one thing up.

Mark each tool as you take it and turn on Hide marked. With a layer this size the map thins out fast, and what is left is a short list of areas rather than a scatter of pins.
