Layers this guide uses

The NPCs and Merchants layer contains 242 placements in the Lands Between and 58 in the Realm of Shadow. The combined 300 records are placements, not 300 unique characters. An NPC can move several times as a quest advances.

Search a character’s name first. If several results appear, compare the region or nearby named location before selecting one. The map can show known stages, but your save decides which stage is active.

Why one NPC can have several markers

Elden Ring quests often move a character after a boss, dialogue choice, item handoff, rest, or region transition. A marker that is correct for an earlier stage can be empty later. That does not make the placement false; it means the quest state has advanced.

Do not mark every result for the same name found at once. Confirm the character at that location in the game, then mark only that placement. Separate marker IDs preserve the difference between quest stages.

Open NPCs with Locations and Sites of Grace when a quest description names a landmark rather than a checkpoint.

A reliable quest-location workflow

  1. Search the exact character name.
  2. Select the result matching the region you have reached.
  3. Check nearby Locations and Sites of Grace for the approach.
  4. Visit the point and exhaust the available dialogue.
  5. Rest or reload only when the quest’s current step calls for it.
  6. Mark that stage found, then search the name again for a later placement.

Following every pin in geographic order can jump ahead of the quest. Quest progression, not straight-line distance, controls which NPC is present.

Merchants and service stops

Merchants share the same category because they are named NPC placements. Search the merchant’s in-game name when known. If you are planning a long collection route, keep NPCs visible and add only the material or equipment layer you intend to collect.

Avoid combining NPCs with dense enemy, consumable, and crafting-material layers at full zoom. The extra icons make moving quest stages harder to distinguish. A clean NPC-and-grace view is usually enough to plan the visit.

Underground NPC stages

Some quests continue through Siofra, Nokron, Ainsel, Nokstella, Deeproot Depths, or Mohgwyn Palace. Pan below the Lands Between surface before checking those results. A nearby surface marker does not identify an underground entrance.

Copy a selected marker link when a quest requires several actions before the visit. The link keeps the selected ID, categories, and view, so you can return to the same stage instead of searching through repeated names again.

Realm of Shadow quest locations

The DLC adds 58 NPC placements. Open the Realm of Shadow NPC map and treat its quest state separately from base-game progress.

Shadow of the Erdtree quest lines can change as major progression advances. The map is a location index, not a substitute for the current dialogue and events in your save. Check the character at the present stage before moving to a later pin.

For a final audit, search one character at a time and use the faded found pins to separate completed stages from unresolved ones. That keeps all 300 placements from becoming one undifferentiated checklist.
