The Island has 6 Backpacks and 5 Hip packs, with both types together at one pickup area in the far south-east.
Layers this guide uses
Open the Gear layer and leave only Backpack and Hip pack ticked. This removes the other Gear types and makes the shared pickup area in the far south-east easy to spot.

Use the type checklist in the layer panel instead of trying to identify bags among every Gear icon. Mark each one after somebody wears or carries it, then hide marked pins for the rest of the session.
How to equip a Backpack
Have a teammate pick up the Backpack and place it on you. The game treats wearing it as a cooperative action, and the first successful equip awards Big Pack.
The Backpack is useful before a gourd run because carrying room decides how many tools and puzzle objects your group can move at once. It does not replace route planning. A player carrying the Folding map can still walk off in the wrong direction with more empty slots than before.
Hip packs are separate Gear entries, so tick both filters if the group wants every carrying upgrade rather than only the achievement item.
Which locations to collect first
Start with the northern and central markers if your group is still working around the Red Tower and Map Room. They fit into early progression without a separate journey to the far end of the island.
The south-central Backpack and north-central Hip pack are close enough for a useful split. Send one player to each, then meet at a linked Broadcast station or return to the Map Room.
Leave the shared area in the far south-east for a route already heading that way. Both bag types are present, but the trip is long if the group has no other work in the south.

Finding the blue pickup structures
Backpacks are found at blue structures on the island. Use the linked marker to choose the correct structure rather than walking to every blue object you can see. The north-west Backpack appears in the Red Tower route shown in the Map Room walkthrough, so it is a convenient pickup during that sequence.
If a bag is missing, check whether another player has already picked it up or is wearing it. The map records the original location, not the current position of a movable object in your host world.
